Network Systems Intern, Operations Technology

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has an opening for a Network Systems Intern in our Operations Technology Department, located in Lansing, MI.

Position Summary:

Job Type: Full-Time Summer Internship

Dates: May 06, 2024 - August 02, 2024

Pay Rate: $21.00 per hour.

Using the "test network" the intern will be tasked to build a "Scada/ICS" network and show how different threats are detected and repelled. Our intention is to demonstrate a real world active "attack" on an ICS system.  The Operations Technology Intern will work with subject matter experts on a continuation of a build out and enhancement of the OT network.

  • Networking design and implementation of a sample Scada/ICS network, integrating log monitoring different threats will be presented and documented how they are monitored and repelled/blocked.
  • The Intern will work alongside of OT and IT professionals as well as interface with the Systems Operations Department.
  • Working on MapCon and its expansion to support ICS maintenance processes.
  • OT Critical Spares, Asset Lifecycle.
  • The Intern will help research and develop the future direction of grid monitoring, automation, and distribution as well as be involved in the planning of the BWL’s Dark Fiber Initiative.
  • The Operations Technology Intern at our offices will learn from, and be supervised by, a mentor in the Operations Technology (OT) Department.


Essential Functions:

  • Programming Splunk monitoring tools.
  • Assist with the planning of the OT Enterprise Historian Project.
  • Assist with Dark Fiber Initiative activities.
  • Learning Fiber Manager and developing procedures.
  • Planning for Distribution Automation/Distribution Management Systems.
  • Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field work.
  • Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Job Specifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution in a Business Management program focused on Human Resources or an Information Technology program with junior or senior status during the summer of 2024.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.


Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:

  • Employees are required to follow the BWL Safety Manual and wear required personal protective equipment, adhere to BWL safety rules and regulations, attend all training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Normal office and occasional field work.
  • Field conditions may include heat, cold, dust, and/or noise.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers.
  • Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
